Never before has a single medium or technology so dramatically changed the very nature of our existence. In an age of user generated social content, the smartphone and smart devices will become a key driver of pedagogical and subsequent architectural design evolution.

Self Directed/Assisted Education

In the context of this boat building school, the smartphone/smart devices and online services become the primary point of preparatory and reflective interaction during the course of education. Students hav 24/7 access to all course materials and facilities and can complete learning hubs and nodes at their own pace. 

Before students come in to the school, they can access preparatory notes, videos, interactive media and forum discussions which will prepare them for the nodes they are about to complete. This is customised and bespoke content designed to be completed during a break at work or during your daily commute. 

Using advanced tracking algorithms in conjunction with IOT (Internet Of Things) devices, your smartphone and automated hardware systems at the school, every visit to the school is customised specifically to your needs. 

Mobile Application

The current market demands a mobile application by default. We are at the point where our devices are now filled with an app for every know device, service, business thought or whim. Our application allows access to course content and building functions through a user interface. Screenshots and an interactive prototype of this user interface based application is contained below.

This prototype is built to emulate iOS, though the application would be available across all major platforms.

Beyond the Application

In truth the native and web application approach to learning content distribution is tried and tested. Current sector market leaders such as Blackboard, Moodle, Echo have refined the interface of their products over many cycles of iteration. Where the focus of these services started as on-premises, then web availability, application development, rich media and now real-time distributed learning.

Natural User interface

The human computer/device interaction model has changed little since the beginning of these platforms. The content of these applications are sufficient, the devices from which this content is accessible is sufficient, but the interface has not evolved to truly reflect the medium. The next true innovation in this space is in fact the conversational interface. The largest tech companies are moving towards this type of interface; Apple with Siri, Microsoft with Cortana and Google with Google Assistant. 

It is the Google assistant which provides perhaps the most relevant and applicable interface. The Natural User interface will allow the system to prompt the user not just through a personal device, but through connected IOT devices, such as room/device indicator lighting or sound systems. The interface of these systems resemble messaging applications, as applications take advantage of deep learning and become 'smarter' they are able to prompt users in a conversational manner. In line with media theory of Mcluhan, it is only natural for the emergence of smart devices to mimic human to human interaction in the conversational style. 

Indirect user interaction

 Instead of waiting for user tactile interaction, these new interfaces will actively monitor metric inputs from IOT devices as alternative indirect user interactions. These measurable inputs can equated to likely outcomes, though it would be a step to far to assume that these machine learning systems are capable in the near term of making value judgements and should not be used in such a capacity as they are their infancy in terms of morale understanding.
